The word Dashansh (or Dashamsha) literally translates to "one-tenth part" or "10%" in Sanskrit. In sacred scriptures and religious traditions, this concept primarily appears in two distinct contexts: charitable giving (tithing) and ritual worship (Havan).
1. Dashansh Daan (Charity & Tithing)
Across various scriptures, taking out one-tenth of one's righteous earnings and dedicating it to social welfare, the needy, or the divine is considered a sacred duty.
-
Hindu Scriptures (Puranas): The Skanda Purana explicitly commands the practice of Dashansh:
"Nyayoparjita vittasya dashamanshena dhimatah; Kartavyo viniyogashcha ishvaraprityarthameva cha."
Translation: From the wealth you have earned by rightful means, a wise person must take out one-tenth (10%) and, as a matter of duty, give it away in charity for the pleasure of God.Scriptures emphasize that this form of Daan (charity) should be given to worthy, genuine recipients from the heart without expecting anything in return. It purifies the soul, diminishes material greed, and stabilizes social balance. - Christianity (Holy Bible): In the Bible, Dashansh is translated as Tithing. The Old Testament mandates giving 10% of one's harvest, livestock, and earnings back to God's house (Leviticus 27:30, Malachi 3:10).
- Sikhism (Dasvandh): Derived from the same root, Sikh tradition strongly mandates Dasvandh, which requires every Sikh to donate 10% of their time and honest earnings to the community kitchen (Langar) or charitable causes.
2. Dashansh Havan (Ritual & Worship)
In Vedic rituals, Anushthans (special prayer regimes), and Mantra Japa, Dashansh refers to the rule of tenthsfor completing a spiritual ritual successfully.
According to the Vedic Shastras, when you complete a specific count of mantra chanting (Japa) for a deity, the ritual must be sealed with a fire sacrifice (Havan), feeding, and charity using the 10% structural breakdown:
- Havan (10%): You perform fire offerings (Aahuti) equal to 1/10th the total number of your mantra chants. For example, if you chant a mantra 100,000 times, you must perform 10,000 Havan offerings.
- Tarpan (10% of Havan): Libations or water offerings are made, equal to 1/10th of the Havan count (1,000 times).
- Marjan (10% of Tarpan): Sprinkling of holy water for purification, equal to 1/10th of the Tarpan count (100 times).
- Brahman / Kanya Bhojan: Finally, feeding the needy, priests, or young girls to ground the energy of the ritual and complete the sacrifice.
3. Vedic Astrology (Dashamsha / D10 Chart)
In the Vedanga of Jyotish (Vedic Astrology), Dashamsha represents the D10 divisional chart. This chart is calculated by dividing a single zodiac sign (30 degrees) into 10 equal parts of 3 degrees each. It is the primary scriptural tool used to analyze a person's profession, career success, fame, and life direction.
